About our digital mural

Embedded in the exterior wall of WGBH's studios is a new Boston landmark: a digital mural designed to brighten the ride for commuters with an image a day that provokes thought, inspires curiosity, and reflects the content and values of public media.

WGBH's eco-friendly, light-emitting diode (LED) screen stretches 30 feet by 45 feet. Powered in part by solar panels atop the WGBH roof, the mural exemplifies our goal of engaging the communities we serve.

It also underscores our commitment to the environment. The most energy-efficient display of its kind on the market, the LED screen operates at a fraction of its power capacity from 6:30am to 7pm. At night, it reverts to a tranquil "screen saver" image of the evening sky. Other energy-saving measures are employed throughout WGBH's LEED-certified facility. WGBH's 2007 relocation to our new, fully digital studios was made possible by 25,000 individuals from across New England, who contributed more than $64 million to Breaking New Ground: The Campaign for WGBH. Together with funding from Harvard University, which purchased WGBH's previous land and property in Allston, these generous donors helped build our all-digital studios. Neither membership dollars nor federal funds were used to construct or support our studios, including the digital mural.
