Congress Michael Capuano told Boston Public Radio Thursday that Democrats should focus more on policy rather than Trump if they want to reclaim a House majority.

Capuano said that the Democrats need to appeal to the voters who may not like Trump, but are still looking for what the Democrats can offer.

“I think it is important to try our best to shift the conversation,” he said. “I think we need to expand that debate — he is wrong and dangerous, and here’s what we offer, and I don’t think we’ve done a very a good job of that thus far.”

To start, Capuano sees an opportunity to inform average families about how he believes the new GOP tax will negatively impact them. “We have to make it real,” he said.

The most egregious part of the tax bill for Capuano was the provision that took away the right to re-mortgage your house for the purposes of paying for your children’s college education.

“Most people don’t know that’s in there,” Capuano said. “That’s exactly how my children went to college. I had to re-mortgage my the house, and that’s just the way life is. To take that away, it is not a slap, it is a punch to the head of the middle class.”

Capuano said that Democrats should focus more on these specific issues that directly impact potential voters.

“That’s the kind of stuff we need to do more of,” he said.
