Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.
Today’s mural features A Cautionary Tale by Cynthia Walat. Her journey as an artist has run a serendipitous path over the last five years. She began as a fiber artist practicing with traditional techniques and materials. Her process has evolved into expressions that incorporate unusual materials, particularly post-consumer waste.
“As a maker of sculptural objects and room sized installations, my goal is to deceive the viewer as they first see my sculptures as objects of beauty and then upon closer examination recognize them as something else altogether,” Walat says. “I intend to inspire questions about consumption. Can something that has this much color and texture really be created with waste?”
Walat has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her work has been exhibited in the Greater Boston area at LexArts, The Hyde Park Art Association, and the Cambridge Art Association since 2021.
