BOSTON, Mass. (Oct. 6, 2026) — On October 6, GBH, America’s public media powerhouse, is kicking off its 75th anniversary year and inviting audiences to join the celebration as it continues to transform for the future.
Since the station’s first broadcast in October 1951, when it aired a performance by the Boston Symphony Orchestra live from Boston’s Symphony Hall on radio 89.7 FM, GBH has become a trusted leader in public media. Whether you grew up singing the ZOOM zip code or ARTHUR theme song, learned to cook with Julia Child, explored space with NOVA, solved mysteries with MASTERPIECE, treasure hunted with ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, listened to live symphony performances on CRB, or relied on GBH News or FRONTLINE to know what is happening in the world around you, GBH has continued to tell stories that matter.
“For 75 years, GBH has been where curiosity thrives, truth is defended, and generations unite to learn,” said Susan Goldberg, President and CEO of GBH. “As we celebrate our rich legacy and who we are today, we are also focused on the future, driving digital transformation and pioneering new models for public media. We invite our community to join us for interactive stories, immersive events, and groundbreaking discoveries.”
GBH’s 75th year will feature rolling launches of public experiences, multiplatform content, and community initiatives designed for audiences everywhere, including:
- Birthday Broadcast at Copley Square: On Oct. 6, the public is invited to visit the GBH Studio at the Boston Public Library for a celebration of both 75 years of GBH and 10 years of the studio during the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. live broadcast of Boston Public Radio with Jim Braude and Margery Eagan, featuring themed beverages from the Newsfeed Café and complimentary cake.
- 75th Anniversary Event Series: Join GBH for a special series of discussions, performances, screenings, and experiences highlighting the past, present, and future of the organization’s inspiring storytelling. Sign up for GBH’s events newsletter for the latest updates in your inbox.
- GBH Family Membership: A dedicated membership tier will be designed for the next generation of public media fans, with discounts, curated educational activities, access to exclusive events, and more.
- GBH Archives: Relive historic media moments—from early black-and-white episodes of The French Chef with Julia Child to rare classical performances recorded with cutting-edge robotic camera technology, streaming free.
- Highly-Anticipated Premieres: The year will include several major premieres from GBH-produced series, including NOVA’s Evolution, FRONTLINE FEATURES’ One in a Million and AMERICAN EXPERIENCE’s Lindbergh, as well as a celebration of the 30th anniversary of GBH Kids favorite ARTHUR with a 30-day reading challenge and new podcast season.
The anniversary comes at a pivotal moment for GBH as it completes the first year of its “Fund the Future” campaign, an ambitious three-year, $225 million initiative launched in late 2025 to secure GBH’s sustainability following the loss of federal funding. The campaign has raised $86 million and the organization now has a total of more than 250,000 members and supporters.
Recently identified as Boston’s most trusted local media outlet for the fourth year through a study by City Square Associates, GBH continues to anchor Massachusetts with independent news across GBH News, New England Public Media, and CAI, reaching 1.3 million listeners and viewers every week. As PBS’s primary content producer, GBH also shares Boston’s creative spirit with more than 35 million national viewers weekly through beloved series like FRONTLINE, NOVA, MASTERPIECE, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW and kids programming.
