Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.

Today’s mural features a drawing by Katherine Desy. Her work is rooted in the practice of automatic drawing, starting without a plan and letting the piece evolve intuitively. Desy is also a drummer and feels beats and rhythms in her body. That sense of motion finds its way into her drawings: the flow between forms, the tension between order and chaos, and the pulse that moves the eye without moving the page.

Working exclusively in black ink on paper, Desy focuses on the basic elements of shape – dots, circles, curves, straight and angled lines – letting the contrast define space and structure.

“Each drawing becomes a sort of meditation and a way for me to step away from the noise of my brain and the world,” Desy says. “Viewers usually find their own pathways through the work, discovering different images or stories. These drawings are a space of reflection for me and for anyone willing to step inside.”

Desy is a pen and ink artist from Stoughton, MA. Originally trained in the Monart method, Desy returned to drawing in 2020 and has shown work in over 20 international exhibitions, most recently at the Kunstraum Kreuzberg Gallery in Berlin, Germany. Desy is also the Director of Marketing for a Boston start-up and serves as the Treasurer on the Cambridge Art Association Board of Directors.
