Often a source of inspiration and hope, art that takes a look at what heroes have done—whether they be the gods of mythology or the nurse at the bedside—gives us an opportunity to rethink the classic stories and create our own.
The Lasell Fashion Collection: Archived at Lasell College in Newtown may be viewed by appointment.
More than 1,000 pieces of clothing and accessories make up this unique assortment that serves as both a working set for instruction and a museum collection. Items appear on a yearly basis in a variety of venues, including a nurses uniform show now on view at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. The collection is represented by a host of designers and fashion houses including Emilio Pucci, Arnold Scaasi, Bob Mackie and spans the 1800s to the present.
An Evening with Dar Williams: in concert with the New Philarmonia Saturday, June 15th, 8pm at the First Baptist Church in Newton
This is Dar Williams’s first concert with a symphony orchestra. Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra Concertmaster Joseph Scheeer, who happens to be Dar’s brother-in-law, arranged Dar’s music for orchestra and especially for this concert. The New Philarmonia Orchestra, founded in 1995, is a 75 member non-professional regional orchestra based in Newton. Her new album, The Time of Gods, produced by U2's Kevil Killen and Peter Gabriel, is Dar’s first album of original material in four years. She presents 10 original compositions on the album that explore many of today’s most challenging social issues, as told against the parables of Greek mythology.
Man of Steel: in theaters Friday
A new take on Superman is here in time for the summer: Warner Brothers “Man of Steel” stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman. Director Zack Snyder, known for “300,” and “Watchmen”, presents the classic story of the young boy who learns that he has extraordinary powers and that he is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.
