The 10th Congressional Race
Bill Delahunt’s decision not to run for re-election left the 10th Congressional District wide-open for both the Democrats and Republicans. It’s become one of the most hotly contested primaries in the state. Emily recaps this morning’s WGBH radio debate among the candidates and is joined by Republican analyst Kerry Healey and Democratic analyst Warren Tolman.
Touring the 10th
The Massachusetts 10th Congressional District, which stretches from Quincy to Nantucket, stretches over 1,000 square miles and is home to the more voters than any other congressional district in the state. It's also the most conservative district in Massachusetts, meaning both parties view it as a big prize come November.

Really bright lets take off good local programming during Begging Period and replace it with usually very old CPB programs. How many timesdo you expect us to watch watch Yoga for Old Farts and the German Band Leader or Rick Steves 1980 visit to Helsinki? More importantly, why would I give you money for that crap?

What a shameful lack of compassion shown for John Odgrens victim by professor Fox and the defense attorney guest tonite. They spent the whole segment sympathizing with the kid who murdered a classmate, and talking about the raw deal he got. Fox and his cohort have intellectualized a brutal crime and devalued the teenage victims life.

Regarding the Joe Donovan Case The injustice is not that Joe Donovan is serving a long sentence. The injustice is that the other two thugs are out of jail. Lets not bleed hearts over a sucker punch throwing thug because his daddy and his mouthpiece come on a show trying to paint him as some "good kid".

I found the full segment awful. Jesse Jackson and all his apologists are 100 wrong. Labron got hid $$$$$$ and his pathetic claim to fame and did a dump job on Cleveland. Clevelands owner was pissed as he should be NO forwarning after 7 yrs. Jackson is an $sshole and so is Labron.
Peter 07.12
Labron James and racism? Jesse Jackson commenting on Labron getting $1120M = and then claiming the owner of the Cavaliers was intimating RACISM?
My GOD can we please simply state that Labron went for the $$, and only the $$? Jesse is simply looking for ANY moment what soever to remain a remotely valid voice. In fact, he is completely false. Jesse, you time is up.

Did Jared Bown misspeak or did I mishear? Did he say that Ellis Paul has performed for and with Woody Guthrie? Woody died in 1967, when Ellis was a wee babe. Jared, did you mean Arlo? or maybe Pete Seeger?

Emily Rooney asked Jill Stein some important questions, but then didnt let her provide answers. We need to hear the differences between Jill Stein and the other candidates. Please plan to have Jill Stein on the program again, and please let her fully answer the questions that she is being asked. As the other stations are excluding her, we look to public TV for this important information. Thank you!

I just watched the replay of the MITES program piece. I found the questions a little obnoxious narrow. I didnt learn much and thought the questioner could could have been better prepared. You do not have permission to use my name. The segment was patronizing and desperate. Yuk.

I just watched a rerun of your July 1 show about summer movies. Ouch. It was painful to hear two critics incorrectly name the location of Winters Bone. It takes place in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, not Appalacia. Those are two distinct places in the United States!

On amending gun laws in Massachusetts.
A few days ago, Greater Boston had two Beacon Hill legislators on the show who discussed the proposed law to establish some limits on gun purchases very reasonable "no more than one gun a month" but why even that many, I say.
The progun republican legislator I forget his name was opposed, of course, to any limits on purchases, quoting the most bizarre reasons.
But I could also detect in Emily Rooneys comments that she didnt see this proposed law as useful even though she knows that straw buyers acquire guns for criminals. She said, why not just go after gun manufacturers?
Are you kidding me/us, Emily? What an ignorant comment that was. How do you propose any state legislature in this country can go after gun manufacturers which are based out of state, or overseas? Do you expect that any gun manufacturer can be held accountable when guns end up in wrong hands?
Another ignorant comment from Ms. Rooney was her idea to "just enforce the existing laws". Easier said than done. Enforcing the existing law COSTS A LOT OF TAX PAYERS MONEY. Last time I checked, we are trying to limit government costs in Massachusetts because the state has serious money problems.
The proposed law would cost much less to enforce than trying to find and prosecute straw buyers at taxpayers expense.
Emily, you need to be putting your thinking hat on when you comment on those issues. Its either that, or you are a closeted progun rightwinger. I have a nagging suspicion that you are in fact a rightwinger and just trying to hide it. Well, you cant hide it.

Regarding the segment on the Gaza Flotilla, last week, I have some names of journalists you might try inviting on Greater Boston.
Two are with the Australia Sydney Morning Herald Paul
McGeough and his Kate Geraghty. The third is an American Iara Lee, with CulturesofResistance.org
They were among the many journalists on board the flotilla when it was stopped by the Israeli Navy.
I am sure everyone would enjoy hearing their perspectives.

First off, I enjoy Greater Boston tremendously. But something bugs the Hell out of me almost every evening that I turn the show on poor grammar!!!!! With all Emilys education and professional credentials, cant she learn to say "with me ARE" instead of "with me IS" when introducing two or more guests? This is basic grammar folks and it doesnt demand a PhD to know this. Thank you!
Len 06.03
I was about to say just what "Edward" did, concerning
Greater Bostons one sided "news" on the Gaza flotilla incident. Why is it the entire rest of the world manages to find people on both sides to interview, on Israel/Palestine issues?
There were several Americans on board the boats, plus
many European legislators, Nobel prize winners, etc.
I hope you make an effort to get some of them on a show in the next week to balance the Israeli.
The rest of the world seems tro think attacking boats in International waters is a very serious development, yrt you think it is matter of factly O.K.
Edward 06.02
Was this the ultimate low point of Emily Rooneys interviewing. What a puff piece for the Israeli US publicity machine. All that was missing was Alan Dershowitz.
Such ignorance. Ms Rooney who gliblly states there is no legal issue about this Israeli raid in international waters should have listened to the debate on the News Hour preceeding her program. Then she says this situations has existed for decades. This blockade has existed since Israel invaded the Gaza strip in 2008.
Believe it or not it has been highly contentious.
It was interesting to see the US TV coverage of protests in Iran. Every street protester was a hero. The young woman shot dead was tragedy. Project that concern on the current situation. What a difference!
What it amounts to is that Israel has an iron fist policy and that in the US you had better not criticise Israeli actions especially on TV. AIPCA rules, directly or indirectly.
A Big Supporter of WGBH.

Watched Jared segment on Municipal Health Costs. I find it ironic that the MMA, which represents municipalities whose only product is service, can mount an attack on its service providers as some monolithic obstacle to success. Your attorney guest gave several examples in the short segment that proves otherwise. In our community, where premiums are split 50/50, the employees (not management) evaluated the GCI and found no significant advantage to either employees or the town. Dont forget, too, that HMOs, the great saviors of their day as a cheaper alternative to the old Blue Cross standard, were accepted as a concession by employees back in the 80s. That they too are now unaffordable is not the doing of municipal unions. MMA sounds a lot like the Vatican. Budgets are in "chaos" (Mr. Beckwiths word) but management "as such" is not responsible. Who negotiated those benefits with the employees? Lastly, maybe if we stopped referring to public employees as "servants" public bias would change. We are jobholders just like everyone else.
