Fall is here — and it’s bringing along all our favorite fall foods.
Marc Hurwitz, a food writer and founder of the Boston Restaurant Talk Blog, joined GBH’s Morning Edition to discuss his top recommendations. You don’t have to eat them all in one day, but no judgement if you did.
Best picks for apple cider donuts
South of Boston: Langwater Farm, North Easton, Mass: An 80-acre family farm located on Route 138 that offers apple cider donuts, along with organic vegetables, herbs, fruit and more.
Hurwitz also recommends:
West of Boston: Westward Orchard, Harvard, Mass: A very quiet farm on Route 111, that offers bucolic scenery.
North of Boston: Connors Farm, Danvers, Mass: A popular location that offers a variety of products, in addition to cider doughnuts and apples.
A maple creemee without the miles
The Vermont soft-serve staple can be hard to find in Massachusetts, but Hurwitz says Momma’s Grocery and Wine in North Cambridge is doing it right.
“It’s a little food shop on Mass Ave. They don’t really advertise that they have maple creemees, but they do have it. And it is very good,” Hurwitz said. “I’d say it’s almost as good as some of the ones I’ve had in Vermont.”
A “peak autumn” meal
If you’re out leaf peeping or on a fall road trip, here are some places you can stop for lunch or dinner at the end of the day.
Wayside Inn in Sudbury, Mass: A traditional, colonial-esque option with a fireplace, a variety of American food options and a new beer garden.
Publick House Historic Inn in Sturbridge, Mass: Similar to the Wayside Inn, Publick House is located in an older-style building with a fireplace, offering food options like pot roast and turkey.
The Grog in Newburyport, Mass: A “very old bar” in the center of town with low lighting and dark wood scenery, with old school food options and sherry wine.
The Rye Tavern in Plymouth, Mass: A farm-to-table American restaurant located near Pine Hills, that requires driving on a dirt road to get to it.
Thanksgiving dinner on any old Thursday
Hurwitz says there are a few places in the Greater Boston area people might not expect to get a really good turkey dinner.
“And what I would suggest is — because Thanksgiving, they might not be open — maybe the night before you get some to go,” he said.
Coops in Quincy , Mass: A neighborhood bar that offers turkey dinners to take home.
Pemberton Farms in Cambridge, Mass: An upscale market that also offers turkey dinners to take home — along with unique condiments, treats and wine.
The Mount Vernon in Somerville, Mass: An old-school restaurant that offers American fare, including turkey dinners.
Victoria’s Diner in South Bay, Boston, Mass: A standard diner with round-the-clock weekend hours, that offers a turkey dinner.
Gerard Farm in Marshfield, Mass: A market that specializes in turkey — with options like turkey pot pie, roast turkey dinner, and turkey sandwiches.
“That’s one of my favorite places anywhere for turkey in Eastern Massachusetts,” Hurwitz said.
