With summer in full swing, it’s a great time to be by the sea, explore the New England coast and get some great eats by the water. GBH’s Morning Edition host Mark Herz caught up with food writer and owner of theBoston Restaurant Talk Blog Marc Hurwitz to get his regional recommendations on some hidden gems with refreshing views of the ocean or lakes.
“There are a lot of modern types of inventive, upscale places on the water where you can sit outside and a lot of those are very popular, especially in Boston,” Hurwitz said. “But the old-school places are still a big draw and there’s still a lot of them within an hour and a half of Boston that I like.”
Places to try this summer
The Tipsy Seagull, Fall River, Mass.: Popular among boaters, The Tipsy Seagull features a selection of fruity drinks like daiquiris and margaritas. Food includes regional classics like clam chowder and stuffies (baked stuffed clams), which you can eat with a view of Mount Hope Bay. “It’s one of the only tiki bars in New England, which is strange, because you figure we have so much coastline we should have tiki bars, but there are very few,” Hurwitz notes.
Fred’s Franks, Wakefield, Mass.: This food cart sits on Lake Quannapowitt just north of Boston, but don’t let its small size deter you. Fred’s is, of course, famous for its hot dogs, but also serves a variety of sausages, burgers and hefty shnurbles, which combine a sausage and a hotdog in a large bun. “It’s a meal in itself. You eat it and you’re done for the day,” Hurwitz said.
Nubb’s Lobster Shack, Cape Neddick, Maine: Located inside the luxury Cliff House Resort, Hurwitz called Nubb’s a “down-and-dirty” seafood spot tucked away in the resort’s basement. Nubb’s features great views of the Cape Neddick coast and serves up seafood favorites such as crab cakes and lobster rolls.
Towne Tavern & Treehouse, Pembroke, Mass.: This local restaurant and bar on Route 14 south of Boston is situated on Furnace Pond and offers a treehouse complete with a bar, and a number of tables, some with views of the lake. Popular items include wings, bar pizza, steak tips and burgers.
Waterdog Kitchen + Bar, Warren, R.I.: A restaurant with Portuguese influences in a 1700s-era structure, this spot has a large outdoor patio that gets breezes off the Warren River a few hundred feet to the west. The menu features clam chowder with grilled pesto sourdough, octopus tacos, mac and cheese with shrimp, and a beloved Portuguese sandwich called a francesinha, which comes with layers of ham, steak, cheese and a fried egg, all in a tomato and beer sauce.
