The owners of Wynn Resorts are discussing the possibility of selling the Wynn Encore Boston Harbor resort and casino in Everett to MGM Resorts. The casino has yet to open its doors to the public.
A joint statement from both companies says they've been having conversations about the potential sale of Encore Boston Harbor over the past several weeks. The statement characterizes the talks as preliminary and that "when opportunities such as this are presented, we are required to explore."
Wynn Resorts just emerged from a suitability evaluation following sexual misconduct allegations against the company's founder. MGM already runs the state's first resort casino in Springfield, and according to state law, the gaming commission cannot award a company more than one gaming license in the state.
The statement says conversations will not impact the opening of Encore Boston Harbor, which is scheduled for next month.
"Regardless of where this leads us, we will ensure that our commitments will be met, and that those who welcomed us into their communities will not be disappointed," the statement reads.
