Two big announcements out of the White House this week could have a profound effect on Massachusetts. On Monday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said the Trump administration would pull Department of Justice funding from communities that consider themselves sanctuary cities. And on Tuesday, President Donald Trump signed off on a new executive order that would roll back President Barack Obama’s climate change initiatives, which includes lifting carbon emissions restrictions to help the coal industry. On immigration, the administration’s harsher enforcement of federal immigration law would mean so-called sanctuary cities like Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Chelsea and Northampton where police are prohibited from inquiring about a person’s immigration status, are at risk. And Trump’s latest executive order could mean the Bay State will be forced to get more aggressive in tackling its own climate change goals without help from Washington.
