Dr. David King, a former combat surgeon in Iraq and Afhanistan who treated several severely injured race bystanders after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, testified Thursday during the sentencing phase of convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

King — a Massachusetts General Hospital trauma specialist —took the witness stand following testimony from amputees Heather Abbott and David Fucarile. Some of his explanations were technical and medically dense, but one statement he made seemed clear to those listening in court: When trying to save a limb, he said, there are "tradeoffs and risks". It is "not for free."

Both Abbott and Fucarile required multiple surgeries, and both described excruciating pain in the months and years after the Boston Marathon bombing.

The government is trying to convince the jury of 12 to sentence Tsarnaev to death. The defendant touched his hair and looked down slightly during testimony but exhibited no visible emotion. The defense team is seeking a life sentence for their client.
