It’s been only a few days since the strongest storm ever recorded slammed into the Philippines. While early estimates of 10,000 dead have been revised down to 2,500, a desperate scramble to bring relief to hundreds of thousands of survivors is now underway.
Boston resident Joe Bolandrina has been helping other local families in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan. And Cecilia Lazaro, who lives and works in the Philippines as a broadcast journalist, flew out of the country the same day the typhoon hit.
Coincidentally, Typhoon Haiyan struck just days before a major United Nations summit on climate change. Referring to what he called the “hell storm” that had just devastated his homeland, the head of the Philippines delegation made an emotional plea for the world to take immediate action to reverse climate change.
