Library bookshelves are full of histories, biographies, poetry and novels exploring the American experience in the Vietnam War. But at least in America, with the notable exception of documentaries, there hasn’t been great interest in cultural works chronicling the Vietnamese experience. Now comes a historic novel based on one family’s story through four generations. This moving saga has captivated readers with its authenticity and lyrical storytelling. “The Mountains Sing” is the debut novel of Vietnamese poet Nguyen Phan Que Mai and is her first written in English. It’s our September selection for “Bookmarked: The Under the Radar Book Club.”
