"Wolf Season" is author and Columbia Journalism School Professor Helen Benedict's seventh novel. It's the second in what Benedict hopes will be a trilogy. The first, "Sand Queen," was published in 2011. In both stories, Benedict explores how soldiers, particularly female soldiers, fare during the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, and what challenges they find as veterans once they return home.

Benedict is also the author of "The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women in Iraq," a non-fiction book that looks at how isolation in the war zone affects female troops. In addition to writing about the military, she writes about sex crimes and how the media covers them. Benedict has won the Ida B. Wells Award for Bravery in Journalism and the James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism.
