With the deadline to submit bids looming, cites throughout Massachusetts — not just Boston — are vying to become home to Amazon’s second North American headquarters.
Amazon has set Oct. 19 as its deadline to receive bids from possible locations for its second headquarters, which the company claims will generate 50,000 jobs. Many municipalities are planning to offer tax breaks and incentives to land the online retail giant.
Greg Ryan, a law and money reporter for the Boston Business Journal, has written and reported extensively about the Amazon relocation proposal. He says several Bay State cities, including Worcester, are offering up bids.
“The state is taking all bids into consideration,” said Ryan. “Gov. Charlie Baker has said the state plans to make multiple bids from towns all over the Commonwealth.”
Ryan says Amazon has a spotty track record with tax breaks and job creation. He says Stoughton was promised 100 jobs that never materialized.
Boston’s problems with its infrastructure and transportation issues, he adds, could hurt the city's chances of getting the bid.
