Just as Americans were celebrating their nation's independence this Fourth of July, the science world was creating some fireworks of its own.
Physicists at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland announced that they had found a new subatomic particle. It had been years since such an event had occurred. And many believe that particle to be the long-hunted Higgs boson – one of the last remaining pieces to the scientific puzzle that explains how our universe works. By all accounts – the discovery was a rousing success.
But not so fast. There is a nightmare lurking beneath what appears to be a scientific dream come true.
We're joined by Brian Greene who explain what this nightmare is. Greene is a Professor of Mathematics and Physics at Columbia University. He’s author of a number of books including "The Elegant Universe." And If you are a PBS fan you may also know him from his numerous specials.
