The city of Lawrence can’t catch a break. Mayor William Lantigua is still deflecting allegations of corruption, while the city strains under the weight of high crime and low morale.

What’s worse, Lawrence schools have suffered under the weight of inconsistent leadership, low state test scores and a high dropout rate.

Last February, the state took control of the Lawrence school district in an effort to turn it around. Now, with the new school year underway, the city is adjusting once again to a new regime.

Our guest today, Jamie Gass, calls this a “post-Katrina moment” of sorts — the chance for schools to start afresh, reverse downward trends and start attending to low-performing schools.
