Ten Boston Public Schools Students Recognized For Outstanding Achievement

(Boston, MA - August 31, 2023) – As part of its longstanding commitment to supporting science education, Boston public media producer GBH today announced the 2023 recipients of the Paula Apsell/GBH STEM Scholarship. Ten Boston public school high school graduates will receive a $3,500 award toward post-secondary STEM education.

The scholarship is named for Paula Apsell, Senior Executive Producer Emerita of the science series NOVA, which is produced by GBH and seen nationally on PBS. The scholarship application process is open to any Boston public high school senior planning to study in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at the post-secondary level.

“STEM touches every part of our lives, and it is so important to fill the pipeline of future engineers, doctors, scientists and more with driven young people from diverse backgrounds,” said GBH President and CEO Susan Goldberg. “GBH is proud to take action with the Paula S. Apsell/GBH STEM Scholarship, supporting this remarkable group of Boston Public School students as they take their next steps towards careers in STEM.”

The diverse group of scholarship winners are from five Boston public high schools with plans this fall to study in STEM at universities across the country, including Boston College, Boston University, Howard University, Northeastern University, University of Massachusetts and University of Pennsylvania.

The scholarship, which launched in 2020, is endowed by GBH for 10 years and donations may be made to the fund. To date, 54 students representing high schools from across the city have been awarded the Paula S. Apsell/GBH STEM Boston Public School Scholarship for their future studies.
