Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.
Today’s mural features artwork by Laurie Kaplowitz. The image uses collaged organic plants gathered from Boston’s parks and green spaces, particularly ginkgo leaves from the historic maidenhair tree in the Boston Public Garden. Kaplowitz personifies the tree and presents it as a female head, serving as a host to birds and fruit in golden hues.
“The pandemic brought me outside on walks around Boston collecting flora which I use in my drawings and paintings to create an imaginary archive of layers of life, imagining what might evolve, prevail, and subside with the passage of time,” Kaplowitz says.
