Step by step

Furniture master Tommy MacDonald joins the pantheon of WGBH do-it-yourself hosts on Rough Cut: Woodworking with Tommy Mac (later Rough Cut with Fine Woodworking, hosted by Tom McLaughlin). The TV series takes its inspiration from New England landmarks, then ventures into the workshop for step-by-step techniques for crafting everything from a keepsake box to a kitchen trestle table.

Strengthening Public Media System

GBH founded the Contributor Development Partnership (CDP) to help public radio and television stations share data, analyze fundraising performance, and develop best practices. CDP operated under GBH until 2018 when it became an independent public benefit corporation.

Next-generation engineers

Real kids learn to think like engineers as Judy Lee and Adam Vollmer take to the road on Design Squad Nation showing that engineering is about taking risks, solving problems, and having fun. Online games, blogs, and training materials help kids apply engineering knowhow to their own projects, from fashion design to cake mastery to building a skate park. The popular initiative eventually becomes even farther-reaching as Design Squad Global.

Challenging Jim Crow

Fifty years after 400 Blacks and whites joined together to ride buses into America's deep South in defiance of 1960s segregation laws, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE’s Freedom Riders, from filmmaker Stanley Nelson, revisits a pivotal moment in U.S. civil rights history. A 2011 Student Freedom Ride recreates the milestone to bring the lessons home. "Tune in," says Oprah Winfrey. "Everyone benefiting from the road the Freedom Riders paved needs to know who they are and what price they paid."

WGBH Teachers' Domain joins forces with PBS's educational online efforts to launch PBS LearningMedia, high-quality, curriculum-based public media content (much of it from WGBH productions) delivered online to teachers (pre-kindergarten upward) to transform teaching, engage students, and help reimagine classroom learning.

Classical comes to RI

WGBH restores full-time classical music radio in Rhode Island through a partnership with Bryant University that gives students access to WGBH experts, technology, and internships. Bryant's 88.7 WJMF retransmits WGBH's Classical New England service as the university moves its student-run station to new tech platforms, including mobile DTV.

WGBH's Media Library and Archives and the Library of Congress became the permanent stewards of the American Archive of Public Broadcasting.

Master Control

GBH and Sony Electronics launched Public Media Management (PMM), a cloud-based content distribution and master control service for public television. In 2020, ownership of PMM was transferred from GBH/Sony to Public Media Group (now Signal Infrastructure Group).

GBH is awarded a $10 million, five-year grant from NASA to develop new instructional models and digital media tools for STEM teaching and learning in “Bringing the Universe into America’s Classrooms”.

A Community Space

The GBH Studio at the Boston Public Library, the first studio of its kind, debuts with live tapings of Boston Public Radio giving access to the mayor, governor, and more state and city officials with a live Q and A, as well as events, poetry readings, and concerts. The Culture Show , GBH Amplifies, and Outspoken Saturdays, as well as GBH Jazz Nights join the line up in 2024 and 2025.

Based on the bestselling books by Victoria Kann, the GBH Kids series Pinkalicious & Peterrific debuts, exploring the arts, creativity, and self-expression. Pinkalicious is an artist who knows what she likes – especially the color pink! – and she’s not afraid to express herself, though she sometimes gets help from her brother Peter in their adventures in Pinkville because anything is possible when you can use your imagination.

Welcome NEPM

GBH and New England Public Radio combined operations to create New England Public Media (NEPM). This partnership brought together Springfield’s WGBY-TV (a GBH subsidiary) and NEPR to form a new regional public media organization serving western Massachusetts.
Molly of Denali Podcast

First Alaska Native Character, July 2019

GBH debuts Molly of Denali, a GBH Kids series featuring the first Alaska Native lead character in a children’s program. The series was produced with Native cast members and production crew members. A companion podcast was also released. It is still producing digital content.
