Samara Joy takes nothing for granted.
Samara Joy is one of the most prominent voices in contemporary jazz. She was the first jazz artist in over ten years to win “Best New Artist” at the 2023 Grammy awards, and has since released the acclaimed album Portrait. She’s at he Berklee Performance Center on Saturday, May 3rd as part of the Boston Celebrity Series. Before the show, two of her biggest fans and hosts of Jazz on 89.7, Al Davis and Va Lynda Robinson, got to speak with Ms. Joy.

In the book, “Black Homeownership on Martha’s Vineyard: A History,” authors Thomas Dresser and Richard Taylor trace the presence of Black Americans on the Vineyard back to pre-Revolutionary War, through the Underground Railroad and the Civil War, and into the 20th century and the Great Migration.
