This week on Open Studio, Jared Bowen focuses on race in America as seen through artists’ eyes.

He begins the conversation with artist Sonya Clark, who looks at how racism is literally woven into American culture by way of the Confederate Flag. In a recent exhibition she imagines what it would be like to fly an alternate flag that says something else.

Then, Bowen speaks with photographer Amani Willet whose latest book, "A Parallel Road" explores the Black experience of driving in America over the past 85 years, looking at why, for Black Americans, the road has historically been less travelled.

Bowen also speaks with artist Rob “ProBlak” Gibbs, whose large-scale murals throughout Boston focus on Black youth and Black joy.

Finally, Jared looks at the work of painter Jacob Lawrence who portrayed a country built on conflict and strife in his series “Struggle: From the History of the American People".
