Voted "The Best-Loved Nutcracker in the U.S.," Mikko Nissinen’s new production of The Nutcracker carries on the beloved tradition of the holiday story but with an overhaul the entire production, borrowing from older dance traditions while setting it in the "Jane Austen era" of the early 1800s. The world premiere of this show marks the first time Boston Ballet has built an entirely new production from the ground up, engaging craftsmen and women from all over the United States.

Betrayal
At the Huntington Theatre Company
Through December 9th

Acclaimed British director Maria Aitken returns to the Huntington Theatre Company to helm Nobel Prize Laureate Harold Pinter’s most accessible play, the Olivier Award-winning classic Betrayal. Aitken brings a unique relationship with the material, as she was herself directed by Pinter as a young actress.

The story is a searing drama that explores love, guilt, and duplicity as it tells of a passionate, seven-year love affair. A series of fragmented memories shows how the couple betrayed not only their spouses and each other, but also themselves through faulty memory and false perception. Perhaps one of the best endings I’ve ever seen in theater.

Chesapeake
At New Repertory Theatre
Through December 16

This extremely funny and well acted comedy explores the age-old questions, “What is art?”, “Who decides which art is worthy?”, and “What kind of art deserves public funding?” A liberal, provocative performance artist at odds with a conservative southern senator hatches a plot to kidnap the senator’s beloved dog hoping to squelch threats of National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) funding cuts. When a twist of fate brings these nemeses together, chaos ensues and karma bites back. See this and you're sure to have a wonderfully fun night at the theater.
