WGBH Earns Three Peabody Awards

WGBH has been awarded three George Foster Peabody Awards, for Design Squad, Frontline, and Nova. The awards — considered among the highest honors in electronic media— were announced April 2 at a ceremony at the University of Georgia. The 67th annual Peabody Awards will be presented June 16, 2008, at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Brian Williams, anchor of NBC Nightly News, will host the ceremony.

Here are WGBH's three Peabody-winning shows, with descriptions from the judges:

Design Squad (Season 1)
design squad "Created to inspire boys and girls in their 'tweens and teens to consider an engineering profession, this lively, fast-paced series puts an educational emphasis into the reality-competition television format."

Marisa Wolsky is executive producer of Design Squad.

Frontline: Cheney's Law
Dick Cheney "In a strongly researched and reported hour that sometimes played like a political thriller, Frontline traced the Bush administration's expansion of presidential wartime powers to a determined, secretive campaign by the vice president that stretches back three decades."

Cheney's Law was produced by Frontline and Kirk Documentary Group Ltd. David Fanning is executive producer of Frontline.

Nova: Judgment Day - Intelligent Design on Trial
judge "The centerpiece of this thoughtful, topical edition of Nova was the re-creation, verbatim, of key testimony and argument from a six-week trial in Pennsylvania that served as a crash course in modern evolutionary theory, the evidence for evolution, and the nature of science."

Produced by WGBH, Vulcan Productions Inc., and the Big Table Film Co. Paula Apsell is senior executive producer of Nova.

Administered by the University of Georgia's Henry W. Grady College of Journalism, the George Foster Peabody Awards recognize distinguished achievement in electronic media by radio and television networks, stations, producing organizations, cable television organizations, and individuals. Entries are judged by a 16-member advisory board, which meets at the Grady College each spring for deliberations. Board members include television critics, broadcast and cable industry executives, and experts in culture and fine arts. For more information, visit the Peabody Awards website.
