Supporting Local Arts News and Programming

Arts and culture have the power to entertain, inspire, inform, and challenge us to think in new ways. Research shows the arts impact us positively by providing opportunities to learn critical thinking skills and build technical capacity for expression. They help us develop stronger community bonds, bridging race, gender, political and intergenerational divides. Now, federal funding cuts to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) are severely impacting the performing arts sector, causing financial strain and uncertainty and threatening the stability of nonprofit arts organizations.

The arts are an economic driver as well, adding billions of dollars to the local and state economy each year, and employing tens of thousands of people across the Commonwealth. Yet, local arts and cultural coverage has been on the decline for years. To address this issue and satisfy the community’s appetite for local arts news and programming, GBH has established the GBH Arts and Culture Fund to support current arts and culture programming and to expand our offerings across the region.

The GBH Arts and Culture Fund will sustain and expand on GBH’s legacy in arts programming from our local daily program The Culture Show to the nationally broadcast Stories from the Stage to classical music programming on 99.5 Classical CRB. Fund gifts will also provide support to address the decline in regional arts coverage with new programming and initiatives showcasing Greater Boston’s and New England’s talented artists, musicians, performers and makers and the organizations that support their work.
