New Hampshire Insiders: The Results
The votes are in from the Granite State and the dust has settled — kind of. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is out in front, with young liberal voters leading him to victory. Entrepreneur Andrew Yang, Colorado Sen. Michael Bennett and former Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick threw in the towel. President Donald Trump secured an historic win for himself. Those are the New Hampshire primary results, but there’s more to these stories because, as we know, what happens in New Hampshire impacts the nation. Guests: Arnie Arnesen — Former New Hampshire democratic legislator and host of WNHN’s The Attitude with Arnie Arnesen. Paul Steinhauser — Campaign reporter for Fox News Politics and The Concord Monitor. Later in the show… If you’re a regular listener, you already know that at the beginning of 2020, Under the Radar debuted brand new music. After almost 10 years of the same theme, we wanted to ring in the next decade with a fresh sound. We spent months searching and carefully curating playlists to pick the perfect song and finally landed on “Fish and Chips” by Grace Kelly and Leo P., which we felt perfectly encapsulated the essence of the show. Now we're huge fans of Grace and Leo, and we want all of you to get to know them as well. Guests: Grace Kelly — award-winning alto saxophonist, singer and songwriter originally from Brookline, Mass., and a graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music Leo Pellegrino — known as Leo P., baritone saxophonist, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He’s a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and a member of the band Too Many Zooz. Together, Grace and Leo make up the collaboration “We Are 2 Saxy.” ————————————————— Show Credits: You can find UTR on the web at https://www.wgbh.org/news/under-the-radar-with-callie-crossley Subscribe to our show wherever you get your podcasts. Local News: Charlestown Laundromats, Logan Airport Monorail, and Boston Recycling
Charlestown has no laundromat - how did gentrification leave the neighborhood’s lower income residents without a crucial life service? A monorail for Logan International? This year Massport may finally make the decision to streamline ground transportation at the airport. And is it worth it to recycle now that it costs Boston more to haul away recyclables than trash? Seth Daniel - Senior reporter with the Independent News Group, which includes the Chelsea Record and Revere Journal. Sue O’Connell – Commentator for NECN and WGBH and Co-Publisher of Bay Windows and the South End News. UTR Podcast Exclusive: Re-Introducing Larry Ladd
One of our absolute favorite shows here at Under the Radar is our annual review of quirky holiday songs with Mike Wilkins, intrepid music collector and radio engineer for the radio program, The World. Each year Mike brings us a carefully curated mix-tape of rescued vinyl one-hit wonders and whatever background he can find behind each track. But inevitably, some of those origin stories are lost to the dusty used-record bins of analog history. When that happens, we turn to all of you - our loyal listeners - to see if we can trace these songs back to their source through your collective memory. Such was the case with one of our favorites from this last year’s mix, “Little Red Top,” by the Glenn Cross Sextet featuring Jane Sharon and introducing Larry Ladd. And you delivered. Guests: Mike Wilkins - Radio Engineer for WGBH'S PROGRAM THE World and quirky holiday music collector and archivist. NH Insiders: Polling Confusion, Undecided Voters And Do Endorsements Matter?
Bernie Sanders is surging with voters in New Hampshire. Or is he? The polls said yes, but other data is conflicting. Endorsements from top Granite State Democrats are rolling in for Joe Biden. Will they make a difference? And can late-starters Michael Bloomberg and Deval Patrick persuade undecided voters to choose one of them? Our New Hampshire Insiders are back. Guests: Arnie Arnesen — Former New Hampshire democratic legislator and host of WNHN’s The Attitude with Arnie Arnesen. Paul Steinhauser — Campaign reporter for Fox News Politics and the Concord Monitor. Later in the show… In January of last year, the Roxbury-based Haley House Bakery Café announced it would shutter its doors, but temporarily, with a planned reopening later. Customers feared the Haley House Café would become another in the growing list of Boston restaurant closings. But the combination café and community space bucked that trend. Now, the new and improved Haley House Bakery Café is gearing up for its grand re-opening next month. Guests: Bing Broderick – Executive Director of Haley House. Misha Thomas – General Manager of the Haley House Bakery Café. John Lara - Professional Baker and Catering Driver of the Haley House Bakery Café. ————————————————— Show Credits: You can find UTR on the web at https://www.wgbh.org/news/under-the-radar-with-callie-crossley Subscribe to our show wherever you get your podcasts. Deadly bush-fires continue to rage in Australia. The environment wasn’t always a hot-button political topic – how can we take the politics out of climate change? Those stories and more on Under the Radar's inaugural Environmental News Roundtable. Abram’s loss sparked criticisms of the state’s election practices, especially around voter suppression. A new report from the Scholars Strategy Network outlines the threats undermining voting in the U.S., and offers concrete potential reforms. Guest: Erin O'Brien - Associate professor of Political Science at UMass Boston, a member of the Mass Politics Profs blog and a contributing scholar to the Scholars Strategy Network. —————————————————- Show Credits: That’s it for this week’s show. Seasonal Silliness: Our Annual Review Of Quirky Holiday Songs
How about two different versions of a song entitled, “Ho, Ho, Ho?” Or another one of our new favorite holiday jams, like "Santa's Pissed Off" and "Sugar and Booze?" They could only be featured together on the 2019 collection of holiday music curated by WGBH engineer Mike Wilkins. These are not the traditional carols from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir or even new traditional favorites like Mariah Carey’s “This Christmas.” Nope, for his 30th annual collection of songs you’ve never heard of, Mike has once again rescued vinyl one-hit wonders from the forgotten bins of overlooked B sides, and resurrected a few newish tunes that might become classics. This is Mike’s "Seasonal Silliness," a Yuletopia recording. Guest: Mike Wilkins - Radio engineer for The World and obscure Christmas music collector. -

Also, everybody wins in Kentucky: Democrats narrowly claimed the governorship and Republicans elected the state’s first black attorney general.
