Jeffrey Tumlin

Jeffrey Tumlin led the San Francisco MTA from late 2019 through 2024. During that time, he addressed the crisis of COVID, rise of Autonomous Vehicles, and loss of about a third of the agency’s revenues due to work-from-home. To address these challenges, he focused on what he could control: agency culture. This work allowed staff to improve productivity and delivery, resulting in:

  • More than 70% reduction in subway delays.
  • Better speed and reliability on main bus corridors, including up to 30% reductions in delay.
  • Nearly 50 miles of new or improved transit-only lanes and transit-priority corridors, resulting in ridership on non-downtown routes up to 140% of 2019 ridership.
  • The highest public approval rating for the agency since data was first collected in 2001.

Prior to SFMTA, he led the creation of the Oakland Department of Transportation and served as an executive at Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates.
