I’ve never been one for New Year’s resolutions. Adding more to my to-do list has never struck me as a good way to start the year. I’d rather set an intention for the year ahead: something delightfully vague, so there’s less chance of feeling like a failure by February.
This year, my grand plan is to be more intentional about carving out time for life’s finer pleasures — like finishing a few dramas I’ve left hanging, so I can turn my attention to January’s line-up. No spoilers here, but new episodes featuring certain Yorkshire vets, plus anything Sherlock-adjacent, seems like a pretty good way to start the year. And because one good drama deserves another, we’ve hand-picked companion recommendations for a few shows below, to round out your viewing.
So, here’s to 2026! May it be filled with drama worth applauding!

At the Front of the Queue — and What to Watch Next
Bookish
If you miss MASTERPIECE’s Sherlock like I do, here’s something clever, stylish, and just a shade subversive, to brighten your new year. Played by Mark Gatiss, the mind behind Sherlock, Gabriel Book is an antiquarian bookseller who has a knack for solving murders with literary cunning. Described by The Guardian as a “tasty nugget of absolute delight,” Bookish unfolds in 1946 London across six episodes steeped in intrigue — a lavender marriage, post-war secrets, and dialogue polished to perfection.
And, if you love stories about books — especially those with secrets tucked between the lines — MASTERPIECE’s Magpie Murders delivers. When a bestselling whodunit is cut short by the author’s untimely death, his agent suspects the unfinished manuscript may hold the clues to a real-life murder.
Murder in the Mountains
Nothing says “idyllic Alpine getaway” quite like a string of suspicious deaths. Murder in the Mountains, set against the breathtaking scenery of Kitzbühel, Austria, follows investigators Lukas Stubner and Nina Weiss as they peel back the secrets behind the postcard-perfect peaks. In German with English subtitles, Season One airs Jan. 29, 10pm on GBH 44 — or stream Seasons One and Two now.
Looking for more Austrian intrigue? Swap snow boots for opera tickets and watch Vienna Blood — where murder and mind games unfold on the elegant streets of the capital.
The Porter
Before civil rights, before equality had a name, the Pullman porters of 1920s Montreal struggled with more than just luggage. They fought for freedom, turning the rails into a battleground for justice and forging the first Black union. Step into the roaring ‘20s, and jazz-age Montreal in The Porter, a gripping drama inspired by real events. The journey begins Jan. 29 on GBH 44 — with all eight episodes available to stream.
If The Porter leaves you craving more jazz-age drama, meet Frankie Drake Mysteries. Toronto’s only all-female private detectives navigate a world of speakeasies, rum-runners, and high-society scandals with style. Four seasons of adventure are streaming now on Passport.
Inspector George Gently
It seems the swinging ‘60s weren’t all peace and love. Inspector George Gently returns for Season Four on Jan. 14 at 8pm on GBH 44, with cases that challenge his old-school ideals in a world on the brink of change. As Gently navigates corruption in high places and murders that strike close to home, his partnership with Bacchus grows more complicated, and each case becomes a battle — not just for justice, but for the very soul of policing. Catch up on all four seasons streaming now, and stay tuned for fresh mysteries coming in March.
For another series that asks the question: how do you uphold justice when the rules keep changing, try MASTERPIECE’s Prime Suspect: Tennison which explores the early career of Jane Tennison, a rookie detective navigating sexism, ambition, and high-stakes cases in the 1970s. Stream now on Passport.
