Murder is manifestly monstrous. But a murder mystery? Magnificent! Marvelous! We are always in the mood! And lucky for us, we are officially entering the season of murder mystery shows, with not one, not two, but SIX new seasons of television rapidly approaching. This week we’ll focus on the first round of shows, two of which are premiering this Sunday evening, September 6. That gives us all plenty of time to stream previous seasons of the next batch, which will be returning in October. (And don’t worry, I’ll remind you about all of those next month.)

Moody Mysteries, Murders, and Mayhem
MASTERPIECE: Marble Hall Murders
We loved Magpie Murders. We were delighted by Moonflower Murders. Now, it’s time to embrace the final installment of this twisty, complicated series featuring an editor and her fictional detective partner in crime[solving]. Marble Hall Murders premieres Sunday at 9pm on GBH 2. Learn more about the upcoming season here.
MASTERPIECE: The Marlow Murder Club
They’re back! Everyone’s favorite trio of sleuths has returned, and this time, one of them might be a suspect. 😱 Catch the Season Three premiere Sunday at 8pm on GBH 2.
Trespasses
Ok, you got me: this show does not begin with an M. However, those of you who yearn for brand new shows will be delighted to hear about Trespasses, a story about two lovers on either side of the conflict in Northern Ireland. I’m personally really looking forward to this one, in large part because the cast includes one of my all-time favorite actors, Gillian Anderson. The first episode airs Sunday, September 20, at 10pm.
No Tricks, Just Treats
As I mentioned, there’s even more new material to look forward to next month, with three brand-new seasons of these returning series. Now is the perfect time to catch up or to refresh your memory before they return.
MASTERPIECE: The Gold
In Season Two, the cat-and-mouse game continues between the detectives hoping to recover millions of pounds worth of stolen gold and the thieves hoping to take their ill-gotten gains off into the sunset.
MASTERPIECE: Maigret
This latest adaptation sets the Maigret stories in modern Paris, and the second season brings new cases, new guest stars, and a new brewing conflict between Maigret and his boss.
Professor T
This reimagining of the Belgian show of the same name has now surpassed the original version in length: we’re about to get Season Five! In the upcoming installment, the Professor, reeling from the events of Season Four, hides in his lectures, avoiding the police until his therapist helps him get back on the horse.

Today, the USS Constitution is one of the biggest tourist draws in Boston, attracting some half a million visitors a year. But at the turn of the 19th century, when the Constitution was still a new ship, it traveled to what is now Haiti during the so-called Quasi-War with France. Its mission was twofold: protect American ships from French privateers, and foster ties between the U.S. and the emerging leadership.
