North Shore Democrat Dan Koh has defeated Republican opponent Micah Quinney Jones in the race for the 6th Congressional district, representing the North Shore area. Koh will hold the seat currently held by Seth Moulton.

Koh, an Andover resident, will become the first Asian American congressperson from Massachusetts when he takes office in January. He has centered opposition to President Trump during his campaign.

“I think people are looking for fighters right now who are going to take on the corruption that we’re seeing in D.C. and actually focus on lowering costs for people. And I was hearing that all across the district from day one,” Koh told GBH News.

As of 11:15 p.m., with 33% of the votes in the race counted, Koh had 64%, according to the Associated Press. Jones, a lawyer and military veteran, had about 36% of the vote at that time.

Koh will join a House with a Democratic majority, which he says will allow the party to aggressively take on issues like climate change, ending the Iran War and protecting LGBT+ kids, “while also subpoenaing every single person who’s bent the knee to this president — take them on, make sure the corruption that we’re seeing never happens again in the United States of America.”

In the Democratic primary, Koh had been backed by both former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, pushing him to victory over state Rep. Tram Nguyen.

Koh has deep ties to Democratic politics. In Washington, he worked as deputy cabinet secretary, deputy director of intergovernmental affairs and senior advisor to the vice president during the Biden administration. Locally, he was the former chief of staff to Boston Mayor Marty Walsh for almost four years.

Koh, who has Lebanese and Korean ancestry, said his victory is “a great moment, I think, not for me personally, but for the state to have more representation and diverse voices representing them in Washington

Rep. Seth Moulton will be leaving the seat after serving 11 years in Congress. He left the seat to run against Sen. Ed Markey, but lost that race in September.
