Janet Mills, the current governor of Maine, said on Thursday she is dropping her bid for the U.S. Senate just weeks before the Democratic primary.

The move, reported by the Associated Press, paves the way for first-time candidate Graham Platner to win the party’s nomination to challenge Republican Susan Collins, who has held the seat since 1997.

Mills is a two-term governor and longtime Maine politician who was seen as one of Democrats’ top 2026 recruits. But Platner has maintained strong popularity, gaining the endorsements of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.
