Rep. Jake Auchincloss On Newly Signed $1.9 Trillion Stimulus Law & More
After weeks of hold-outs and set-backs, President Biden signed his $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill into law Thursday, after it passed without a single Republican’s support in either chamber of Congress. The legislation will, among other things, send $1,400 stimulus checks to millions of Americans, increase the child tax credit for 2021 and continue increased unemployment benefits until September. Congressman Jake Auchincloss joined Jim Braude to talk about the Democrats’ first big political success of the Biden Presidency and what is next on the horizon.

But anxiety can come along with the transition back to the new normal, with many wondering how to navigate everything from safety issues to social interactions and a more-active daily life. Doctor Lucy McBride, a physician in Washington, D.C., recently wrote about these complex feeling for the Washington Post in a piece called, ‘I’ve been yearning for an end to the pandemic. Now that it’s here, I’m a little afraid.’

As more people get shots, hesitancy toward COVID vaccines has been falling. But as of just a few weeks ago, three in ten people were still saying they probably or definitely will not get vaccinated. Some have been pushing for public figures to use their platforms to promote the vaccine, including professional athletes. But that idea faces an uphill battle, with vaccine hesitancy and privacy concerns among athletes themselves. Senior ESPN writer and NPR sports commentator Howard Bryant talked about Lebron James’ recent declaration that he will not publicly disclose whether or not he gets vaccinated.
