More than 42 million people have cast their ballots already in this year’s presidential election — both through in-person early voting and by mail — as increased voter enthusiasm has converged with widespread concern about the coronavirus pandemic and President Donald Trump’s encouragement of his supporters to engage in “poll watching." The heightened attention to voting — and videos of long lines at polling places — has shed light on issues of voter access and voter suppression that long pre-date this year.
