Smashed eggs, dumped milk and plowed under vegetables — that’s what many of our nation’s farmers have had to resort to, after losing business from closed restaurants and hotels during the coronavirus pandemic.

This unprecedented food waste comes at a time when more people than ever are in need of food. Why are people having to wait hours in line at food pantries, while farmers are forced to destroy food? Part of the answer has to do with our broken food supply chains, which get farmers' crops to grocery stores and restaurants.
