Scotland fans are celebrating their 1-0 win over Haiti. With Morocco tying Brazil earlier in the day, Scotland stands alone at the top of Group C after the first weekend of games.
Haiti had made its first and only other appearance in the men’s World Cup back in 1974.
Rose Calixte came to the game from Brooklyn and wasn’t even alive when Haiti made that trip.
“It’s wonderful to see them making it this far,” Calixte said. “And I hope that, you know, they’re gonna make it out of the group stage and, you know, we’re gonna support them where ever they are.”
The wait hadn’t been as long for the Scots, who last played in the World Cup in 1998. But Scotland has never made it out of their group.
Earlier in the day, Scottish fan Andy Frame was optimistic to see the team take a different path.
“I’ve been there before, we’ve seen the disappointment in the past World Cups of Scotland,” Frame said. “But this time I hope it’s different.”
For Haiti, the path forward will be difficult. They play Brazil on Friday. But for fans like Kitzner Vassor, who watched the game from Boston, just making it to this moment means a lot.
“It’s absolutely amazing, it feels amazing, it’s a great moment for Haitian pride and the Haitian community here in Boston,” Vassor said.
