The 2026 Boston Marathon will see increased law enforcement presence due to a heightened threat level stemming from the war in Iran, law enforcement officials announced Friday.
While officials are “not aware of any specific or credible threats” targeting Monday’s race, said FBI special agent Ted Docks, the FBI will be operating in a “heightened threat environment.”
Docks warned that large public gatherings, such as the marathon, are “an attractive target for individuals and groups seeking to inflict harm.”
“Due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, the potential for directed and inspired threats are increased,” he said. “The FBI and our partners are taking all of these things very seriously.”
More than 30,000 athletes from around the globe are expected to take part in the race from Hopkinton to Copley Square.
Boston Police are partnering with state and federal law enforcement on public safety efforts during the event. Officials said that there will be an increased presence of both uniformed and plane-clothed officers throughout the race.
Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox called the plan a “well-coordinated effort among our city, state, and federal partners.”
“Our officers, in uniform and in plain clothes, will be strategically deployed on the route and in the crowds, doing all they can to ensure a safe family-friendly day,” said Cox. “We want everyone to enjoy themselves, but remind you that only properly credentialed runners and staff are allowed on the race route. Leave alcohol, marijuana, drones, and large bags at home, and if you see something that doesn’t seem right, say something. Call 911 or alert one of our officers who are along the route. The public is our partner in public safety, and we need and appreciate your support.”
