It’s been 1,428 days and counting since Boston saw a storm with over 6 inches of snow. That’s the second-longest stretch on record. But the streak is going to come to an end this weekend.
If you moved to Boston in the last four years, you might not be familiar with a major snowstorm. We can get pretty big snowstorms here, but the good news is, we know how to deal with them.
Right now, it looks like the storm should bring the first dusting of snow late Sunday morning, and most of the accumulation will come overnight. In the eastern and north-central parts of the state, you could wake up to a foot or a foot and a half of snow Monday morning.
If you need to get your errands done, Saturday will be sunny and quite cold. Temperatures will be starting in the single digits north and west of Boston, with highs in the mid-teens. Even come Sunday, the temperature isn’t likely to break the mid-20s.
Snow should break out across the area late morning into the early afternoon on Sunday. By 3 p.m., there will likely be a coating to an inch down on the ground; by sunset, that will be up to four to six inches on the ground. The snow will continue to pile up overnight, and by the time the sun rises Monday, many areas will likely have between 12 and 18 inches of snow. Cape Cod and the Islands, as well as west of Route 495, will see a bit less precipitation, likely 6 to 12 inches.
Another inch of snow — or a few — will likely fall during the day Monday until it ends in the evening.
This storm is not going to be as intense as other coastal storms, so don’t worry about flooding, coastal damage or power outages. Areas to the south, toward Cape Cod and on the islands, could see some issues with power because the snow will be heavier there.
By Tuesday, the storm will be over and it’s just cold temperatures for a while — so the snow’s not going to melt anytime soon.
