Oedipus (@Oedipus1), who served as program director at the now defunct rock station WBCN for nearly 30 years, first met Bowie while he was on tour in Boston in 1983. Oedipus snuck into the back of Bowie's limo, stealing his cigarette butts so he could smoke "Bowie molecules." '
Their relationship soon transitioned from interviewer and interviewee to friends. Oedipus had the opportunity to tour with Bowie in 1992 in Kyoto, where he spent ample time with Bowie and got to know him as a person. While most celebrities are "surrounded by satellite systems" and you "never get to know them," Oedipus recalls Bowie as "personable."
"He was an inspiration to me, a hero. And eventually he became a friend," said Oedipus. "There was a magic about him. There was a persona about him. You just get swept into his aura."
Oedipus recalls Bowie in the prime of his career, his two different eyes and the way he expounded on the topics he cared about.
Bowie inspired him, "you can be what you want. I can be a purple hair punk rocker."
As for the Bowie persona that affects him most, Oedipus considers himself a "Diamond Dog."
