The state transportation committee approved $200 million in bonding to help cities and towns fix roads and bridges after this record setting winter.
John Robertson of the Massachusetts Municipal Association says the winter has been a hard one: “There’s been a lot of damage to local roads and bridges. So that there are a lot of construction plans just waiting to get started to address those problems.”
Transportation Committee Senate Chair Thomas McGee says the 200 million dollars for those projects comes on top of 100 million released in January. But he says that’s still not enough.
“There clearly is not enough money to fix our local roads and bridges,” said McGee. “Clearly there’s not enough money to run the MBTA the way it needs to be run. And clearly there’s not enough money to do what we need to do in the highway system around Massachusetts.”
The bonding still needs to go through a few more committees before it hits the Governor’s desk. McGee says he hopes it will be available in time for the upcoming construction season.
