Gordon Hamersley might not have known it at the time, but he was a trendsetter when he first opened his South End restaurant some 27 years ago. With simple French-style fare and a signature chicken dish that had Julia Child raving, Hamersley’s Bistro quickly became a must go for gourmands. But maintaining such excellence year after year can be exhausting.

So it was perhaps understandable when Gordon and his wife Fiona decided to close Hamersley’s Bistro this fall. But they aren’t standing still. Gordon is once again backing the annual Super Hunger Brunch, which raises funds for the Greater Boston Food Bank. The event raises enough money each year to provide 200,000 meals to needy families across Massachusetts.
