Incoming Massachusetts Senate President Stan Rosenberg says lawmakers will have a challenge ahead of them when it comes to paying for road repairs. That's after voters last week said "no" to automatically raising the gas tax with inflation.
“It causes a bit of a problem but the voters have spoken. And it’s gone. It’s off the table. We have to think about how we’re going to finance transportation going forward.”
The gas tax is a main source of funds for road and bridge repairs and new transportation projects. A 3-cent-per-gallon increase that took affect last year was not impacted by the vote repealing increases in future years.
Governor-elect Charlie Baker supported the ballot question getting rid of automatic increases.
