Secretary of State John Kerry says the country and the world need to confront the threats of climate change while there's still time.
“I know that climate change to some people can feel like a distant future prospect, maybe even a future challenge. That’s dangerous – falling prey to that perception. Because it’s not.”
Kerry said climate change is already changing the world in real and significant ways. He says those changes also bring the opportunity of new technology and the potential of millions of new jobs to develop the renewable energy industry.
“We still have in our hands a window of opportunity to be able to make the difference. But the window is closing quickly.”
Kerry says the cost of doing nothing could bring about not only disastrous climate changes but also global conflict.
Kerry made the comments after touring a Boston wind technology testing center with his British counterpart, Philip Hammond .
Hammond echoed Kerry's comments, saying the fight against climate change is also a battle for long-term security.
