Drumming as therapy: that's the mission behind Jonathan Mande's educational and personal-development program called Drums & Wellness. Jonathan Mande, a Boston-based drummer and soon-to-be Lesley University graduate, created the program after recognizing that drumming was the constant in his life. Mande drummed through a civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, after immigrating to the United States without any knowledge of English, as he lived in homeless shelters in Brookline, when he repeated his senior year of high school, and after he spent 35 days in jail. Jonathan spoke with Callie Crossley about the extraordinary circumstances that led to the development of Drums & Wellness and how he became the education and mental-health advocate he is today.
