The Massachusetts Department of Corrections says former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez committed suicide in his prision cell early Wednesday morning while serving a life sentence at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts. Hernandez was found hanged by a bed sheet attached to his cell window around 3:00 a.m. The former football player was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial Health Care Hospital. Hernandez's sudden death comes five days after being acquitted of murder charges in the shooting deaths of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in Boston's South End in July 2012. Hernandez was serving a life sentence for the murder of Odin Lloyd in 2013.
Boston Globe NFL reporter Ben Volin spoke with WGBH's Bob Seay about the former professional football player's career and how his personal life complicated it. Volin reports that the New England Patriots are aware of the reports but have decided to not comment on the death of their former teammate, as they travel to Washington, D.C., to be honored at the White House for their Super Bowl LI victory.
