Brigham and Women’s Hospital is mourning the loss of Dr. Michael Davidson, who died overnight after a gunman shot him at the hospital before turning his weapon on himself.

Hospital staff gathered Tuesday morning to lower the flag in front of the hospital to half-staff to remember Davidson, whose wife is expecting a baby.

Brigham staff gathered around the flagpole as Mark Anderson, an IT project manager at the hospital, sang Amazing Grace, and the flag was lowered. Many of the staff wore surgical scrubs. They wiped away tears and hugged each other. The hospital’s president, Elizabeth Nabel said Davidson exemplified the best of the best. She called him a kind and caring physician. She asked the Brigham community to keep his family in their thoughts and prayers, including his wife, three children, and a baby on the way.

Nabel thanked the staff for their strength, courage and commitment, and said they will get through this together.
