The City of Chelsea and its Police Department is fighting to gain back the trust of its residents and at the same time increase diversity within the police force.

Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes tells WGBH Morning Edition host Bob Seay that recent deaths of unarmed black men by police officers has had a major impact on him and his department.

Kyes says, "over the last five months, across the nation and back here at home, in the state and in Chelsea, it has caused us to open up our eyes, that this is something we really have to put at the forefront to help build better trust to the communities that we serve."

Kyes says Chelsea has a 29 percent diversity rate and the average rate in major cities is 20 percent.
