The CPB/WGBH National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) is a division of The Media Access Group at Boston’s public broadcaster WGBH. NCAM projects and initiatives expand the reach and refine the technologies of captioning and description, while breaking new ground in the fields of technology, media, disability, and education. NCAM’s fellow access departments at WGBH include The Caption Center, the world’s first captioning agency, founded in 1972, and the Descriptive Video Service which has made television, film and video more enjoyable to viewers who are blind or visually impaired since 1990.

NCAM pioneered captioning and audio description on the Web and currently leads industry standards-setting activities related to built-in television closed-caption decoders, captions and audio descriptions in digital broadcasting, and accessible online learning. NCAM creates and disseminates tools, guidelines and resources related to digital delivery of captions and descriptions for the Web, DVDs, CD-ROMs, and first-run and IMAX films in theaters as well as media device navigation solutions for users with disabilities
