It always bothered Eunice Kennedy Shriver. As far as she saw it, people with special needs were treated unfairly, even unjustly, and many children with intellectual disabilities didn’t even have a place to play, so she decided they could play in her backyard.
Well, what started as a summer camp in 1962 now affects tens of millions of people in more than 170 countries year round. And as the world continues to watch some of the greatest athletes in the world during the London 2012 Olympics, we thought it fitting to check in with two of those millions whose lives have been changed by Eunice Kennedy Shriver’s vision, known today as the Special Olympics.
