Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.
Today’s mural features art from Steve Imrich’s series of paintings about the North Shore wetlands near Newburyport, MA called JOPPA 9. The painting recalls a late day impression of the “Joppa Flats” wetland area near the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. The image includes elements of the Merrimack River estuary before arrival to the Atlantic Ocean, juxtaposed with the signs of human intervention such as crossing roadways and drainage channels.
Imrich’s work has been included in curated group and solo exhibitions throughout New England including the New Britain Museum of American Art, The Danforth Museum, and the Fitchburg Art Museum. He paints in Somerville, MA, and his work is represented by Soprafina Gallery in Boston. His background includes studies and practice in the visual arts and architecture, as well as professional experience in aviation.
